Exploring professional sustainability in English Teaching through creative writing and dialogue (Ballarat)

Description

What challenges are you facing as you attempt to sustain yourself in the English teaching profession? Has your identity as an English teacher changed or evolved as you have ‘pivoted’ from one direction to another over the past few years?

This writing day will offer critical and creative opportunities for you to reflect, scrutinise and imagine possibilities in your work. We will engage in a range of activities including the construction of metaphor, poetry and narrative writing, dialogue, and embodied activity to examine contemporary teaching experiences. The activities modelled in the workshops can be applied to English teaching at any level and we aim to use social processes to explore and capture personal experience and voice. This professional learning day is part of the VATE sponsored research project “The sustainability of the English teacher profession/al”. The project is inquiring into the experiences and challenges of English teachers in this state over the past three years. Initial findings highlight the significant role that teacher identity plays in sustaining individual teachers and the profession as a whole. Participants may choose to contribute what they create during the day to the VATE research project, although this is not required.
